The Future Metallurgy Forum aims to provide a platform for internationally eminent metallurgists/leaders to contribute to the search for a shared vision for the future of metallurgical science, metallurgical engineering and the metallurgical industry in the wider context of global sustainability.

Presentations from the Future Metallurgy Forum can be found here!

Historically, the discovery, development and application of metals have set the pace for the evolution of human civilisation, driven the way that people live, and shaped our modern societies. Today, metals are the backbone of the global manufacturing industry and the fuel for economic growth. However, extraction and processing of metals are highly energy intensive and cause severe environmental damage: the extraction of seven major metals (Fe, Al, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni and Zn) accounts for 15% of the global primary energy demand and 12% of the global greenhouse gas emission.

The grand challenge facing the entire world is decoupling economic growth from environmental damage, in which metals have a critical role to play. The worldwide campaign for environmental protection and tackling climate change have triggered a complete rethink of how we source, formulate and deploy metallic materials in the future. Over the last seven years, the LiME Research Hub has been actively searching for answers.
